Look in these two bins, a top view of a storage box that is 12″Dx24″Lx18″W. A good sized box. I call the contents “scrap.” A friend of mine calls his version of this his “inventory.” We both take a lot of heat from people that do not understand that to create we need to have a pile of what most would call “junk.” To be fair those people, the ones that give us guff, have helped us haul this stuff around for a long time, always making a space for it, even if they took on a little attitude about it.
This stuff inspires at the same time that it provides materials to rip up and repurpose into something that delights. Honestly, just looking in these bins delights me, but I get past that and pick and choose and then construct something. The whole process is delightful. So moving my studio provides an opportunity to sort and consider what I might throw out. It will be the ordinary stuff that goes, but it won’t be this stuff…this scrap that is my gold.
